Sabina Bauen - Prize Winner of the National Olympiad in International Law
Sabina Bauen, a student at "Turan-Astana" University (Group MP-24-4), secured III Place at the annual National Subject Olympiad in International Law, held at the Karaganda University named after Academician E.A. Buketov.
From the Prize Winner: "The most challenging aspect of the Olympiad was analyzing the legal mechanisms for resolving international conflicts, specifically finding a balance between the principle of territorial integrity and the right of peoples to self-determination. Under strict time constraints, it was essential to argue positions based on the UN Charter and the jurisprudence of the International Court of Justice. The support of my scientific supervisor, Kunim Abilkasova, helped me remain focused on the methodology of legal analysis," Sabina shares.
The Mentor’s Perspective, Kunim Abilkasova, Senior Lecturer of the Department of National and International Law and mentor to the winner, notes that a student's success at this level is the result of readiness for non-standard legal challenges: "International law today requires more than just memorizing norms; it demands the ability to operate within conditions of legal uncertainty. Sabina demonstrated critical thinking while analyzing cases related to the effectiveness of international sanction regimes and the legal status of territories. It is vital for us that students can apply international consulting tools in real-time. This achievement confirms that our department is moving in the right academic direction."
The Olympiad result confirms a high level of preparation but does not limit it. We continue our work on expanding the practical experience of our students, integrating their achievements into their future professional careers.
New cases and new challenges lie ahead.
