Start at TAU: How the Freshman Orientation Week is Going
The first day of September was marked by a bright and important event - the university officially opened its doors to a new generation of students. To ensure a smooth, structured, and comfortable transition from high school to university standards, TAU is hosting its traditional Orientation Week.
Our four-day intensive program is designed to help every freshman confidently enter the educational process and get thoroughly acquainted with the structure of the university.
Today, inspiring words from the university leadership, public figures, and parting wishes from mentors were shared. The culmination of the day was the solemn oath-taking ceremony, where the freshmen vowed to sacredly remain loyal to the academic values and traditions of the university. The meeting in the University's assembly hall set a business-like yet warm tone for the entire academic year; the students got acquainted with the leadership of the University, schools, and departments, the faculty, and the traditions of TAU.
Addressing the audience with a welcoming speech, Rector of Turan-Astana University, Professor Gulzhamal Zhaparova, noted: «Enrolling at our University is your primary investment project in your own future. Today, you become part of a strong academic community. Our university has created all the necessary conditions for you to gain not only deep theoretical knowledge, but also the practical skills required to build a successful career. Be purposeful and never hesitate to set high goals for yourselves!»
Next, the first cosmonaut of Kazakhstan, Halyk Kaharmany, and Professor of the Information Technology Department, Toktar Aubakirov, addressed the freshmen: «In life, as in any profession, the main secrets of success are discipline, consistency, and the courage to take the first step. Today, science and technology are developing at an extraordinary pace. Strive for new knowledge, seek non-standard solutions, and remember: professional heights are conquered by those who are genuinely dedicated to their passion.»
Outlining the key priorities and educational strategy of our university, First Vice-Rector of TAU, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Aitzhan Abdyrov, stated: «Turan-Astana University is a modern academic and educational center where theory is continuously reinforced by practice. Our goal is to teach you how to think analytically, work in teams, and adapt quickly to the demands of the modern market. The entire university team is ready to support you at every stage of this journey.»
Sharing her inspiring words, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Klara Abisheva, emphasized: «Your university years are the best time to shape your intellect and professional culture. Learn to ask the right questions, dive deep into primary sources, and do not be afraid of scientific inquiry. The ability to think critically and argue convincingly is your main capital in the modern world.»
Reminding students about personal growth and successful integration into the community, Aigul Zerkesheva noted: «University is not only lecture halls and exams, but also an essential school of communication. Learn to build productive cooperation, support one another, and believe in your own strength. We are ready to help you along this path!».
Following the official ceremony, first-year students met with their academic mentors and faculty members from their respective degree departments. Together, they reviewed the structure of the educational programs in detail, as well as the guidelines for developing an individual study plan using the Elective Course Catalog (ECC).
The eventful first day concluded with an Information Hour. During meetings with their advisors, freshmen covered the core provisions of the Code of Academic Integrity and took their first steps in navigating the university's digital environment by exploring the «Platonus» Automated Information System.
Starting on the second day, first-year students will begin their scheduled classes while continuing to familiarize themselves with campus infrastructure. As part of the intensive program, guided tours will be held at the Library and Information Center, where students will discover opportunities to work with a rich print collection, electronic databases, and international research resources. Special attention will be paid to support services: freshmen will receive detailed explanations regarding academic, social, and organizational procedures, including academic mobility programs and scholarship conditions.
The final day of the week will be entirely dedicated to active campus life, sports, and student associations. A large-scale Student Organizations Fair will unfold on the university grounds. Every freshman will be able to personally meet with leaders of youth movements and sign up for clubs of interest - ranging from IT teams and scientific societies to sports teams, debate clubs, and volunteer projects. The program will culminate in a vibrant «Welcome TAU» Open Air event - a university-wide outdoor celebration. This will be an excellent opportunity to get to know peers better in an informal setting and feel part of TAU's united family.
